\n\tOne day, in the spring of 1868, I mounted Brigham and started for <\/font><\/strong>Smoky Hill River. After a gallop of twenty miles I reached the top of a <\/font><\/strong>small hill overlooking that beautiful stream.<\/font><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\n<\/p>\n

\n\tGazing out over the <\/font><\/strong>landscape, I saw a band of about thirty Indians some half-mile distant. I <\/font><\/strong>knew by the way they jumped on their horses they had seen me as soon as <\/font><\/strong>I saw them.<\/font><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tMy one chance for my life was to run. I wheeled my horse and started <\/font><\/strong>for the railroad. Brigham struck out as if he comprehended that this was a <\/font><\/strong>life-or-death matter.<\/font><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tOn reaching the next ridge I looked around and saw <\/font><\/strong>the Indians, evidently well mounted, and coming for me full speed.<\/font><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tBrigham put his whole strength into the flight, and for a few minutes did <\/font><\/strong>some of the prettiest running I ever saw. But the Indians had nearly as <\/font><\/strong>good mounts as he, and one of their horses in particular, a spotted animal, <\/font><\/strong>gained on me steadily…….<\/font><\/strong><\/font>\n<\/p>\n
