There are very few now.<\/strong><\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n \n\tOf the monstrous neglect of education in England, <\/strong><\/font>and the disregard of it by the State as a means of forming <\/strong><\/font>good or bad citizens, and miserable or happy men, private <\/strong><\/font>schools long afforded a notable example.<\/strong><\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n \n\tAlthough any man <\/strong><\/font>who had proved his unfitness for any other occupation in <\/strong><\/font>life, was free, without examination or qualification, to open a <\/strong><\/font>school anywhere; although preparation for the functions he <\/strong><\/font>undertook, was required in the surgeon who assisted to bring <\/strong><\/font>a boy into the world, or might one day assist, perhaps, to <\/strong><\/font>send him out of it; in the chemist, the attorney, the butcher, <\/strong><\/font>the baker, the candlestick maker; the whole round of crafts <\/strong><\/font>and trades, the schoolmaster excepted; and although <\/strong><\/font>schoolmasters, as a race, were the blockheads and impostors <\/strong><\/font>who might naturally be expected to spring from such a state <\/strong><\/font>of things, and to flourish in it; these Yorkshire schoolmasters <\/strong><\/font>were the lowest and most rotten round in the whole ladder.<\/strong><\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n \n\tTraders in the avarice, indifference, or imbecility of parents, <\/strong><\/font>and the helplessness of children; ignorant, sordid, brutal <\/strong><\/font>men, to whom few considerate persons would have entrusted <\/strong><\/font>the board and lodging of a horse or a dog; they formed the <\/strong><\/font>worthy cornerstone of a structure, which, for absurdity and a <\/strong><\/font>magnificent high-minded LAISSEZ-ALLER neglect, has <\/strong><\/font>rarely been exceeded in the world.<\/strong><\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n \n\tGet this classic tale by Charles Dickens in PDF format.
